Register in three steps

Are you non-employed and not yet affiliated to an OASI compensation office? If so, you must register. Here is what you need to do.

When do I have to register?

From 1 January following your 20th birthday, you are required to pay contributions to the OASI, DI, and ICO. If you move to Switzerland from abroad, your contribution liability begins the following month.

Important: You are personally responsible for ensuring your contributions are paid in full.

If you work only to a limited extent or take a break from gainful employment, contact your compensation office after the end of the year to find out whether you owe contributions and the amount due.

What is my situation?

You are classified as non-employed and must pay contributions if any of the following conditions are met:

  • You are not engaged in any gainful activity.

  • You are employed but earn less than CHF 5,000 per year (married couples: CHF 10,000).

  • You work for less than 9 months per year.

  • Your working hours are below 50 per cent.

In these cases, you must register with an OASI compensation office. The office will verify your contribution liability. Further information can be found here.

What documentation do I need?

The registration form can be found on this website. Additional documentation may be required, so that the compensation office can verify your situation.

The compensation office may request the following documents:

  • Tax Return / Notice of Assessment

  • Tax certificate or unemployment insurance statement

  • Confirmation of financial support

  • Certificate of enrolment

  • Accident or sickness daily allowance statements

  • Current payslips or your most recent salary certificate

  • Contribution notices

How do I register?

Once you have all the necessary documentation, complete the registration form. The website will forward the application to your compensation office.

Usually, you are insured with the compensation office in your canton of residence. If you have taken early retirement, you will remain with the compensation office of your last employer. This office is also responsible for the contributions of your non-employed partner.

If you are a student, you do not need to register. Universities and colleges provide student data to the compensation office once a year.

What happens after I register?

The compensation office records your details and verifies your registration. They will contact you if they have any questions. The office then determines your contributions based on your tax data and personal information. Once the assessment is complete, you will receive a written notice of decision.
